Use a Last Will and Testament to choose a guardian for your minor children should something happen to you. Also to protect your assets and divide your property. You can also name someone to manage your estate.
A Durable Power of Attorney allows you to authorize someone else to handle many types of transactions on your behalf like banking, bills, tax returns, insurance benefits, government benefits, and more.
It remains in effect if you become incapacitated, due to an illness or an accident.
A Living Will is a legal document that specifies to healthcare providers and others the type of treatment that you consent to should you become too ill or incapacitated to make decisions yourself.
Also called an Advance Healthcare Directive.
A Medical Power of Attorney is different from a Durable Power of Attorney. A Medical POA appoints someone to make healthcare decisions for you should you become incapacitated or unable to act for yourself. It is often used in conjunction with a Living Will.
A General Power of Attorney ends the moment you become incapacitated. A durable power of attorney stays effective until the principle dies or until they act to revoke the power they've granted to their agent.
